Gateau Piment is a very popular snack here in Mauritius. It is normally deep fried and this makes it become more crunchy. It is great to be taken while having a cup of tea and it can also be accompanied along with Tomato Chutney

You can also prepare different types of dishes with it such as Gateau Piment Salad, Gateau Piment Rougaille, and Curry Bari.






Gateau Piment Recipe


Ingredients
  • 200 g Yellow Split Peas
  • 1 bunch of Spring Onions finely chopped
  • 1 bunch of Coriander Leaves finely chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies finely chopped
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions
  1. Wash the spit peas and let them soak overnight.
  2. Drain them well.
  3. Blend them in a blender but not too finely.
  4. Then, pour the paste in a big bowl.
  5. Add spring onions, coriander leaves, onion, salt and chillies and mix them well.
  6. Make small balls and flatten them with your palms.
  7. Heat oil in a saucepan for deep frying or you can even use a deep fryer here to make your task easier.
  8. Put the small balls in the oil and let them fry till golden brown.
  9. Drain them to remove excess oil.
  10. Place them in a serving dish.


Gateau Piment is preferably served hot along with ketchup or even green chilli sauce. It is a very delicious snack which you can serve your guest during tea or coffee time. Here, in Mauritius, Gateau Piment is very famous. 

People buy it almost everyday mainly those who don't have enough time to prepare it at home. It's the most demanding snack here. You can prepare other quick and easy dishes with Gateau Piment mainly if you are in a hurry. So, you must definitely try it out.
